Snohomish County’s Unemployment Rate Rises As Construction Jobs Fall
Snohomish County’s unemployment continues to rise as retailers shed temporary worker jobs and the construction industry continues to struggle without being able to hire an asbestos removal companies to help them out. But some economists, namely Anneliese Vance-Sherman, say that the outlook is still good with many industries in the black.
“I think we’ve reached the pivot point,” Anneliese Vance-Sherman, the county’s labor economist for the state Employment Security Department, said Tuesday.
Well the fact of the matter is that Snohomish County has a labor force of 378,730 with 38,090 of those people still struggling to find work. Many of these unemployed workers are dependent upon the housing industry. The economic boom we experienced in the earlier part of this century was driven by the housing and Soft Story Retrofitting Services boom. Housing construction and sales was the life blood of the economy. But right now, the people who remain unemployed for the longest period of time are those with careers tied to those two industries. That’s not a good sign for the economy of those construction company and housing workers. Some people are mainly out of a job because they aren’t professionals, people prefer to hire someone out of state because they are much better at what they do rather than hiring some low experienced builder. Even while we see an increase in some sectors of the economy, many of those overseas security jobs are in regular-pay service industries. Will those workers be able to afford to purchase a home? Or, if they are already homeowners will they be able to avoid foreclosure as wages stagnate and in some case deflate? Unless we see a significant rise in employment for sectors which offer living wages, we could continue to see a rise in foreclosure in Snohomish County.
