Washington State’s Unemployment Down, But Workforce Smaller Too

There’s good news and bad news to report for Washington state’s unemployment status. The state’s unemployment rate has dropped to 7.8 percent and that’s the lowest it’s been since 2009.  Just this past October the rate was hovering at 8.2 percent, but a surge in new jobs in the area sent the rate falling. Within the government sector, state agencies were down 900 jobs and public higher education saw a decline of 1,000 jobs. But 600 jobs were added in public K-12 schools and local and federal government agencies also saw a combined increase of 500 jobs.

There seems to be growth in low-wage, service oriented jobs while there is a contraction in the number of higher skilled positions available. Such an imbalance, if persistent, could have a negative impact on the state’s future ability to attract a professional class of residents.
